VOX Awards 2016

Vox Awards Finalist

So the last time I received an email saying I was on a shortlist it was for a round of redundancies… So imagine my surprise this time to find I had made the shortlist for a VOX Award!

These awards are the only dedicated voiceover industry awards in the UK. There are not many categories, with 4 finalists in each, so to be one of them is really ace.

I’m nominated in the category “Best Imaging & Promo Voiceover Performance” which I’m particularly chuffed at as this is the area of voiceovers I started out in many moons ago, and still do a huge amount of today.

Particular thanks must go to Chris Stevens & Mark Gabler at Devaweb, who on a weekly basis look after the production for the stations I voice for, and turn a raw voice session into audio masterpieces.

You can check out the audio in question here:

And wish me luck for Saturday the 25th June!

Are British brands actually British..?

British flag brand

Buy British was the phrase once upon a time, but now many brands we think of as being from this fair isle may not be quite as British as you think. See if you can figure out the ones that still are, and the ones which are now Ex Pats..!

Music Imaging on WildHitz UK

If there’s one thing I’ve got more experience of voicing than anything else it has to be Imaging. Going way back 15 years or so, some radio idents were the very first thing I did as a voiceover, and being from a radio background that’s what I’ve done the most. Imaging can be as varied as anything else, it depends what “image” you are looking to project, are you soft and velvety, heavy grunge rock, or the latest dance music..? It doesn’t matter, what does though is making sure you get the right imaging to seamlessly match up with your product.

Get it right though and it can make a massive difference to your output, it’s the cherry on the cake, and really sets up what your channel is all about. Without imaging, or a brand identity you’re just playing songs, and as everybody knows, it’s much more fun going to a party with a theme than just sitting around eating crisps.

Recently I’ve been working with a new online music channel called WildHitz, who after experiencing much success in Europe have now launched a channel just for the UK. The concept is simple, current big hits, very much like a TV channel but the difference is you can skip the tunes you don’t like and if you create a user log in then it also remembers the kind of tunes you like. Interspersed is hot imaging with great visuals which create a real cool sense of fun. It’s all about enjoying life, living for the weekend, and the way the branding is produced really gives the channel its sense of identity.
