If there’s one thing I’ve got more experience of voicing than anything else it has to be Imaging. Going way back 15 years or so, some radio idents were the very first thing I did as a voiceover, and being from a radio background that’s what I’ve done the most. Imaging can be as varied as anything else, it depends what “image” you are looking to project, are you soft and velvety, heavy grunge rock, or the latest dance music..? It doesn’t matter, what does though is making sure you get the right imaging to seamlessly match up with your product.
Get it right though and it can make a massive difference to your output, it’s the cherry on the cake, and really sets up what your channel is all about. Without imaging, or a brand identity you’re just playing songs, and as everybody knows, it’s much more fun going to a party with a theme than just sitting around eating crisps.
Recently I’ve been working with a new online music channel called WildHitz, who after experiencing much success in Europe have now launched a channel just for the UK. The concept is simple, current big hits, very much like a TV channel but the difference is you can skip the tunes you don’t like and if you create a user log in then it also remembers the kind of tunes you like. Interspersed is hot imaging with great visuals which create a real cool sense of fun. It’s all about enjoying life, living for the weekend, and the way the branding is produced really gives the channel its sense of identity.
